These feature different locations. It is possible to explore the exhibition on foot or seated at ruruHaus. For people who have not yet been able to attend documenta fifteen, for example, due to the admission prices, so-called Soli Walks (Solidarity Walks) are offered.

Visit

The regular opening hours are from 10 am–8 pm daily. Event times may vary from this.

The health of our visitors is very important to us. For this reason, documenta fifteen pursues a safety and hygiene concept that is constantly adapted to meet current developments and regulations.

As soon as there are any changes to these regulations, you will always find the latest version in our Covid-19 notes.

In order to make the overall experience of the exhibition accessible to people with disabilities, inclusivity is an essential component of the organization even before the exhibition begins.

This includes, for example, developing a website in easy read and offering special guided tours for people with disabilities. The exhibition venues are also being made as barrier-free as possible. More information on accessibility at documenta fifteen

A key guiding principle of documenta fifteen is to allow as many people as possible access to the exhibition. For this reason, there will be a variety of offers, such as family tickets, guided tours for children to the age of seven years and tickets for school classes.

Located in the Fridericianum, RURUKIDS is a place where babies, children, and adults find a safe and aspirational environment to learn and explore in playful ways. Every day there are activities like workshops, performances for and by children, making music together, film screenings, and readings in the library with children’s books.

A comprehensive concept is currently being developed to take the special needs of families, children and adolescents into account.

Additionally, the Family guide Walking, Finding, Sharing offers children and families, but also comic fans and experienced exhibition visitors, alternative perspectives on documenta fifteen.

Changing tables are located in every accessible restroom.

For lost children, it is best to go to the Lost & Found office at Friedrichsplatz. The staff there can activate the security officer. Alternatively, it is possible to approach the admission staff at any exhibition location.

It is not permitted to eat or drink in the exhibition buildings.

Animals are not permitted in the exhibition buildings. Assistance dogs are an exception.

Photography for private purposes without flash is allowed, photography with flash or tripod, filming of exhibition videos etc. is not allowed. Commercial photography and video recording require prior permission.

You will find luggage storage for smaller pieces of luggage (hand luggage size) at all main exhibition venues. Lockers for larger pieces of luggage (travel bags, suitcases, trolleys, etc.) are available at the central train station and at the Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe long-distance Railway Station.

Backpacks up to a size of 20 cm x 30 cm x 10 cm and bags up to a size of 40 cm x 30 cm x 15 cm are allowed in the exhibition rooms. Bags, handbags and shoulder bags are to be carried in the hand or close to the body (not on the back). Measurements differ in the municipal museums.

All larger backpacks or bags, as well as cane umbrellas, walking sticks, etc., must be left outside in the rain barrel or at the luggage storage area. Medical walking aids, such as crutches, are excluded from this policy.

Due to developments in regard to Covid-19, there may be changes in baggage acceptance for hygienic reasons. As soon as changes to these regulations occur, you will find the current version in our Covid-19 notes.

There will be a guidance system on site as well as a documenta fifteen site plan, which will be available free of charge online and in printed form, so that visitors can find their way around.

Information on outdoor artworks from previous documenta exhibitions can be found here.

documenta fifteen

documenta is an exhibition of contemporary art held in Kassel every five years under changing Artistic Direction. documenta is considered one of the most important exhibitions of contemporary art worldwide.

In its own way, each documenta has steered the international conversation about art in new directions. Every five years, Kassel’s “Museum of 100 Days,” as documenta is often called, welcomes thousands of artists and cultural professionals as well as millions of visitors from all parts of the world. documenta has become a seismograph for international contemporary art and its engagement with current social issues.

documenta exhibition has existed since 1955. documenta was founded by Arnold Bode and since then has displayed modern and contemporary art every five (initially every four) years.

The documenta und Museum Fridericianum gGmbH is a non-profit organization supported and funded by the City of Kassel and the State of Hesse as shareholders. The organization is responsible for the documenta exhibition, which takes place every five years, as well as the Fridericianum, the documenta archiv, the documenta Institut, and the documenta Halle.

The fifteenth edition of documenta will take place in Kassel.

documenta fifteen will take place from June 18 to September 25, 2022. Each documenta exhibition lasts 100 days. A wide range of events will also take place in the run-up to the exhibition.

ruangrupa is the Artistic Direction of documenta fifteen. With ruangrupa, an artists’ collective is curating documenta for the first time. The nine-member collective from Jakarta, Indonesia, realizes exhibitions, festivals, and other projects.

ruangrupa was founded in 2000. The collective’s way of working is based on a holistic social, locally rooted, and personal practice that is strongly connected to Indonesian culture. In it, friendship, solidarity, sustainability, and community have a central meaning. Loosely translated, “ruangrupa” means “art space” or “spatial form”.

ruangrupa has based documenta fifteen upon the values and ideas of “lumbung”. lumbung is the Indonesian word for a communal rice barn where the surplus harvest is stored for the benefit of the community and distributed according to collectively determined criteria. lumbung is not be understood as an exhibition concept, but with its values and ideas symbolizes the curatorial and artistic practice of documenta fifteen. Here, lumbung can be seen as a kind of collective resource fund based on the principle of communality.

The idea of solidarity and participation expressed in the lumbung model is realized above all in the local anchoring of documenta fifteen and its participants, including the Kassel and international lumbung network and the exhibiting artists. With a view to the common good, they invite us to think about new economies and distribution practices within the framework of documenta fifteen and to try out ways of solidarity in this regard.

All lumbung members and artists can be found here.

In line with ruangrupa’s artistic concept and lumbung practice, the theme of sustainability is approached holistically at documenta fifteen and reflected throughout all aspects of exhibition planning and implementation. In addition to addressing ecological factors, the focus is on cultural, social, political and economic aspects. Find out more here.

With every documenta fifteen ticket sold, one euro goes to long-term sustainability projects, including a reforestation project in the Reinhardswald forest near Kassel and a project for the ecological enrichment of oil palm and rubber plantations in the Jambi region of Sumatra.
