Event
Mons Pubis Veneris by Saodat Ismailova
Long twisted hair comes out of a vulva in the work by Jazdul Madazimova hosted by lumbung artist Saodat Ismailova. During the performance Mons Pubis Veneris, braids of female genitalia will be created and extended – a narrative of sexuality, passion, and beauty, but also of shame, control, and power politics. Through the performative act of braiding, the installation grows, shaping the shared practices of resistance, liberation, and solidarity. The installation will be made of fabric cut-outs resulting from production waste in garment factories. Besides the material side of waste, this also draws attention to the workers’ health. Very often, factories employ young migrant women. The unmarried women are hired before they become pregnant and are laid off once they are about to have children. The workplaces are cold in winter and hot in summer. Many sewing factory workers complain about musculoskeletal illnesses because of the working conditions. By performing the shared ritual of braiding as female symbol, the shape of care and resistance grows.
