Lumbung

Lumbung is a word from the Indonesian language.
It means: Rice barn.

But Lumbung can also mean many other things.

For example:

  • Friendship,
  • working well together,
  • sharing things,
  • looking after everyone in a group.

That is why Lumbung is an important idea
for documenta 15.

The meaning of Lumbung in Indonesia

There are rice barns in many villages in Indonesia.
These rice barns are wooden buildings.
If farmers have too much rice,
they put it in these wooden buildings.

If people in the village do not have enough rice,
they can take some rice from the rice barn.
But they have to follow some rules.
This is how the people in the village help each other.

The meaning of Lumbung for documenta 15

ruangrupa thinks:
documenta 15 should be like a rice barn.

An important part of Lumbung is following rules.
ruangrupa thinks it is important that:

    where artists can meet.
    Then artists can talk about their ideas.
    And they can make plans for artistic events together.

The Lumbung network

At documenta 15,
many different people make up a network.
This network is called the Lumbung network.
It is made up of:

  • people from the city of Kassel
    and 14 groups of artists from all over the world.

Britto Arts Trust

This group is from the country of Bangladesh.
The group started in the year 2002,
The group makes pieces of art all over the world.
These pieces of art are very colourful.
They are made from many different things.

FAFSWAG

This group is from the country of Aotearoa.
Another name for this country is: New Zealand.

FAFSWAG started in the year 2013.
It helps different groups of people.

For example: Indigenous people in Aotearoa.

This group started in the year 2009.
It organises a festival in Mali.
You can see many pieces of art at this festival.

This group started in Indonesia in the year 2018.

INSTAR

That is the short term for:
Instituto de Artivismo Hannah Arendt.
This group is from the country of Cuba.
It started in the year 2015.
The group helps the people of Cuba:

  • to read many different books
  • and to learn important things.

JaF

That is the short term for: Jatiwangi art Factory.
This group is from the country of Indonesia.
And started in the year 2005.
It creates many pieces of art.
For example:

  • Films,
  • music
  • and it organises events.

Project Art Works

This is a group of artists from Great Britain.
Each artist has:

  • A different mental condition
  • and their own special way of making art.

The Trampoline House was a special building
in the country of Denmark.
This group started to meet in the Trampoline House in the year 2010.
The group help refugees.

The Trampoline House building has gone now.
But the group continues their work.
They also take part in art exhibitions.

ZKU is the short form of: Zentrum für Kunst und Urbanistik.
This is a building in the city of Berlin
in the country of Germany.
More than 500 artists work here.

This groups brings different people together.
For example:

  • people from different countries
  • people with very little money
  • people from different groups.
