Screening: Athirah/Emma (2016)

The movie was adapted from Athirah, a semi-biographical novel about Hj. Athirah Kalla – mother of the Vice President of Indonesia, M. Jusuf Kalla – by Alberthiene Endah.

This film shows the story of Athirah and Jusuf Kalla when they were young. Athirah’s life falters when her husband marries another woman. In a cultural environment where this is possible and with no room for women to refuse, Athirah struggles with her feelings to keep her family together. Meanwhile, his eldest son, Ucu (Jusuf Kalla), doesn’t know who to side with. His mother was the person he loved, full of patience and kindness, while his father remained a figure he admired.
