Opening Party @ Sandershaus/Hafer­kakaofabrik

For the opening of documenta fifteen, we invite you to various parties, taking place simultaneously across Kassel. The party at Sandershaus features icy gee, Sanmao, Erregung Öffentlicher Erregung and derPraktikan.t.

When locals talk about the legendary times of Kunsthochschule Kassel, they most likely talk about the dazzling summer parties. Ascended from the sweaty basement rooms of the art school, icy gee has been selecting tracks since 2010. First as part of the audio-visual performance duo Mord im Dunkeln together with comic artist Aisha Franz, later as part of the collective “Team Pommes”, a crispy and golden team around Aiko Okamoto (Mo Chan) which is constantly changing to create a wide ocean of fries. Today she is a resident artist at Kassel, part of the artist duo “kiin.” (publishing with ROTOPOL, Kassel), member of the animated short filmmaker collective “Sticky Frames” and deeply entangled with the local and international comic, animation and FLINTA skate community. With her DJ sets she delights the audience with a laid-back, yet danceable mix of hip-hop/rap, electronic, pop, and alternative.

Sanmao plays a fusion of different sounds, harmonies and instruments—something between dream pop, alternative indie, and jazzy sounds. Imagine taking a microdose of acid on the beach and then break up with your partner but moments later fall in love with a sea monster. Sanmao see their band as a concept, a stage, a space to try and experiment, a way to express things they might not otherwise say, and as a place for new narrations and utopias. This June the three friends released their second EP no horizon. Sanmao will be accompanied by Chilean musician Arturo Leyton.

Anja Kasten (vocals), Michael Schmid (drums), Michael Hager (guitar), Laurens Bauer (bass), and Philipp Tögel (synthesizer) are rarely together in one place. One part of the band lives in Berlin, the other part in Hamburg. But when they make music, they are very much in one place. A place worth visiting: Erregung Öffentlicher Erregung freely quote their way through the history of subversive guitar music. Post-punk meets borrowings from Sonic Youth, herbaceous beats meet spherical instrumentals. EÖE is a trippy album that uses the sound of the Federal Republic of the early 1980s as a starting point for a transformation into the 21st century. Ideal meets Einstürzende Neubauten to take malaria tablets.

DJ Jaqueline Ostheim, known as derPraktikan.t, had already explored her obsession for analogue vinyl music for a couple of years before she started performing in public. She was taught by the legendary DJs of the worldwide unique record store Lost and Found. Today she is the most promising newcomer of the age after corona, one that inspires with various mixtures of all subareas of rock music. Her most significant appearances include a residency at the mother of all indie and alternative clubs Mutter and several special events at the Schlachthof cultural center.
