Making Time: ARAC’s Un/Chrono/Logical Timeline and the Traveling Printing Suitcase by Another Roadmap Africa Cluster (ARAC)
Making Time: ARAC’s Un/Chrono/Logical Timeline and the Traveling Printing Suitcase is an open session of collaborative memorialization facilitated by the collective making of a new iteration of lumbung artist Another Roadmap Africa Cluster‘s Un/Chrono/Logical Timeline making use of silk screen printing. The Un/Chrono/Logical Timeline is an exercise in “inhabiting” histories and considering history a resource. Moving away from the monumentalized history of the world, the Timeline animates, activates, and counter-maps. The exercise is as much a collective map as it is a conflation of time and space that pluralizes progress. It suggests more inclusive visions of the rhythm of a calendar and articulates questions of social justice by visualizing time differently. ARAC’s Timeline and the Travelling Printing Suitcase emerged from the Johannesburg Working Group (JWG) and are indebted to the radical models of art education in the service of social justice and liberation, as practiced by the Medu Art Ensemble (1977–1985), which the JWG has studied. These studies focus on the concepts and histories of exile, travel, and mobility within the arts.
