40 Mirrors: Interactive Performance by Saodat Ismailova

Chilltаns are representatives of the world of spirits, but they can be anyone. According to legend they are people living earthly lifes. Such dual citizenship of the chilltаns and their interchangeability can be captured through their images in mirrors. Moreover, chilltans can be metals.

By making forty mirrors out of steel through collective monotonous labor—a form of work habitual to women in Central Asia—to the sounds of Kazakh radio, the interactive performance Forty Mirrors by lumbung artist Saodat Ismailova and her guest Dana Iskakova sets out on a search for a portal to the chilltаns.
