The Material Ghost: Espiritismo and the Hallowed Body by Instituto de Artivismo Hannah Arendt

Espiritismo de cordon, a Cuban religion, has been at the center of Rafael Ramírez’ film practice. The workshop The Material Ghost: Espiritismo and the Hallowed Body, organized by Ramírez together with lumbung member Instituto de Artivismo Hannah Arendt (INSTAR) traces cinema as an anechoic chamber for the spirits, perhaps a practice that should not be called cinema anymore. Following the notions of Cuban American scholar Gilberto Perez and essayist Antonio Benítez Rojo, participants will study Caribbean imagery as a feedback-machine and its Atlantic undercurrents as ectoplasm. Ramírez’ films, audio-works, and thought experiments will help to map this uncharted territory.
